7/12/1868: A fire fanned by hot nor-west winds destroyed 39 wooden buildings (three-quarters of the CBD) in just three hours. Regulations followed, requiring CBD buildings to be constructed in brick and stone, making way for the Victorian and Edwardian heritage-style buildings. The fire started in a cabinetmaker’s workshop behind D. Munro’s Furniture Warehouse, now Hallensteins, and spread south towards the Theatre Royal.
