Family and women hidden within commercial histories
Mary Elizabeth Cave Archer was born in England in 1830, the daughter of William Cave and Mary Ann Brooke. In 1856 she married Fulbert Archer at Westbury-on-Trym, near Bristol. The couple came to New Zealand in 1867 and made their home in Timaru, where Fulbert managed the business later known as Miles, Archer & Co.
Mary’s surviving record is frustratingly slight. She lived in Timaru during a period of commercial growth, raised her children and died on 27 October 1871, aged about 41. A descendant has identified Mary’s headstone in Timaru Cemetery.
We do not yet have reliable evidence showing Mary’s own community work, decisions or everyday contribution. Her inclusion in HerStory therefore carries an important caveat. She reminds us that buildings and businesses often preserve men’s names, while women within the same families can become difficult to see. More research may yet restore the fuller story of Mary’s Timaru life and relationships.
