This used to be the site of the Beverley site of of the Beverley War Veterans’ Home, and then the RSA. Local records include a 1972 Timaru Herald clipping about a 25-pounder gun at Beverley War Veterans’ Home, and a 1971 article about the home’s closure.

This stop is about the long aftermath of war, even if there is nothing to see here now. Returned servicemen aged. Some needed care. Some lived with injury, illness, grief or memories that did not leave them. Veterans’ homes show the practical side of remembrance: food, housing, health, companionship and dignity.

It is important that the tour does not end when soldiers come home. For many people, that was when another part of the war began.
